These athletes went vegan — and stayed strong.

The Washington Post did a nice piece on athletes switching to vegan diets feeling stronger, healthier and happier too. Here's a highlight: “Your relationship with food becomes pleasing your palate versus making your body look good,” says bodybuilder Washington. “Even when I travel, I head straight for the local Whole Foods and start looking for the ingredients to make a spicy vegan pizza or pan-seared tofu with Japanese sweet potatoes. When you become a vegan, you become a foodie.” http://ift.tt/2fPCFOi #veganathletes #plantpower #plantstrong #ahimsa

NutritionFacts.org

It's hard to find a yoga practitioner who smokes -- likely due to the wave of education we received and now ubiquitous awareness of the dangers of smoking tobacco. Unfortunately most yogis continue to eat food that contributes to disease...on a regular basis. This is not meant to cast blame, as awareness of nutrition science is not nearly at the level of awareness of tobacco. But how many people need to suffer needlessly until we reach a tipping point? It's our duties as yogis to educate ourselves, not just for ourselves but for the benefit of all beings. I'm hopeful that a tidal wave of change and awareness about our diet is approaching. #nutritionfacts #eatingmeatislikesmoking #FoodRx #SAD
Given that our diet is the #1 cause of death and disability, surely nutrition is the #1 thing doctors learn in medical school, right? Surely it’s the #1 thing your doctor talks to you about, right? How could there be such a disconnect between the science and the practice of medicine? Let’s do a thought experiment…...

Millennials and A Plant-Based Diet. Better Food, Better Choices.

With Borscht-Belt humor, nutrition guru promotes a healthy, unsweetened New Year

Dr. Fuhrman offers tips to make the Jewish Near Year (Rosh Hashana) celebration sweeter by replacing unhealthy foods with those that are naturally sweet and nutritious. "So I think sharing white flour and white sugar baked goods is dangerous. And it’s something that our ancestors never did. There’s no white flour products in ancient times; we’re not recalling any tradition from the past by putting white flour in products." "You could make all types of breads that are healthy with mixed whole grains, with sprouted grains, with wheat berries, and you could sweeten things with dates and with raisins, and with things that are more wholesome rather than putting in honey also." http://ift.tt/2dny586 #jewishnewyear #roshhashana #healthyholidays #drfuhrman #foodRx #wfpb

Increased Lifespan From Beans | NutritionFacts.org

Bean are nutritional powerhouses, rich in soluble and insoluble fiber which studies are showing is essential in keeping our gut bacteria happy. Consumption of beans in particular have been shown in large population studies to be protective against heart attacks. They are packed with slow burning complex carbohydrates, protein, iron, and other minerals. Beans are one of the most affordable superfoods! And they taste great too :D #staplefoods #beans #bluezones #nutritionfacts #gutbacteria #foodRx #forksoverknives

Fall Harvesting Your Nutrition | Huffington Post

"It seems like in today’s world we are constantly hearing about the latest diet or food trend that is all the craze...the actual best piece of advice is to do as our ancestors did. Count on the bounty of the seasons to feed and nurture our bodies. Eat foods that are harvested locally, when they are in season, and in their natural state. Because eating these seasonal foods in their natural state is one of the healthiest ways to eat this time of year." '70's Food Movement Promoted Benefits Of Plant-Based Diet

On NPR this morning. Frances Moore Lappe started advocating plant based diets in the 70s, back when we didn't have a lot of the published science and supported evidence we have today. She's still making people more aware of the social and environmental consequences of our food choices and her book, Diet for a Small Planet, is as relevant today as ever. “Hope is not what we find in evidence, it's what we become in action. ” -Frances Moore Lappe #realfoodheroes #dietforasmallplanet #npr

International Day of Peace 21 September

Happy International Day of Peace! The UN is using this day to promote its 17 Sustainable Development Goals to Improve Life All Around The Globe. If there is 1-thing -- actually 3-things, for most of us -- we can do TODAY to make a positive difference in ALL 17 goals, that thing is leaving animals off our plates. Even if it's just for one meal, if all of us do it everyday, it makes a huge difference. Our food choices are inextricably connected to the health, well-being, and peace of ALL life, people, animals, and our planet. http://ift.tt/QYma1m "Every single one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals is a building block in the global architecture of peace. It is critical that we mobilise means of implementation, including financial resources, technology development and transfer, and capacity-building, as well as the role of partnerships. Everyone has a stake and everyone has a contribution to make." Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Health | NutritionFacts.org

"Most deaths in the United States are preventable, and related to nutrition. According to the most rigorous analysis of risk factors ever published—the Global Burden of Disease Study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—the number one cause of death in the United States, and the number one cause of disability, is our diet, which has bumped tobacco smoking to number two. Smoking now only kills a half million Americans every year, whereas our diet kills hundreds of thousands more." -NutritionFacts.org I try not to bombard friends on Facebook with my opinions or beliefs about making personal choices. But when it comes to nutrition, I am passionate about sharing what I've learned because we're talking about information that can make or break the health and well-being of our families, our loved ones. When it comes to life and death decisions about what we consume on a daily basis, why are we so interested in peoples' opinions (of this fad diet or the next) -- or cling to our own? Shouldn't we demand the best available evidence? if anyone is seeking a reliable source for the facts on food, nutritionfact.org separates itself from most other sites because they don't accept any money from groups and they give you the source, the data, the graphs and let you make up your own mind. They don't tell you what to eat. But I can tell you that after reviewing the facts, I could not continue eating the way I believed was healthy 6-years ago. http://ift.tt/2cXsZ4y #showmethescience #nutritionfacts #lifestyleintervention

High animal protein intake associated with higher, plant protein with lower mortality rate: Increased death risk primarily associated with red meats, eggs and dairy -- not found among those with healthy lifestyle

The findings in this study are significant because they explain the gap between the mortality rates of ovo-lacto vegetarians and vegans. For cancer specifically, it turns out that consumption of eggs increases the risk factor for cancer MORE than processed meats. Moving away from a meat centered diet towards a vegetarian diet can be a positive step, but it's important that everyone receives this information so that we can make conscious choices based on the best available evidence, for our health, the health of the planet, and the animals. #nutritionfacts #nutritionstudies #Satya

Matthew Kenney: Why I’m Vegan

Chef Matthew Kenney's personal evolution: "Eventually, my passion for health overtook my passion for business as usual. It evolved through my yoga practice and becoming more connected to the planet. One night, a friend invited me to a random raw food restaurant in the East Village.. We dined...surrounded by one of the most unusual groups of people I’d ever seen in a restaurant. They glowed, with skin like nectar and eyes as bright as stars. It sounds bit alien, but the imagery in those early days of raw food was powerful and I saw beneath the surface. Food could change lives." http://ift.tt/2cyhK3Y #thefutureoffood #whygovegan #matthewkenney #yogafood
